The Origin of the Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday with a history stretching back over 2,000 years. The most widely known origin story revolves around the patriotic poet Qu Yuan (屈原).

During the Warring States period, Qu Yuan was a minister in the state of Chu. He was known for his loyalty and wise counsel, but he was eventually slandered by rivals and banished by the king. In despair over the corruption and decline of his state, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

The local people, who admired Qu Yuan, rushed out in their boats to try and save him. They beat drums and splashed their paddles to scare away fish from his body. They also threw rice dumplings (zongzi) into the river to feed his spirit.

To commemorate Qu Yuan's sacrifice, people began to hold dragon boat races, symbolizing the efforts to rescue him. They also continued the tradition of eating zongzi and drinking realgar wine, which was believed to ward off evil spirits.

Today, the Dragon Boat Festival is a time for families to come together, eat zongzi, watch dragon boat races, and remember Qu Yuan, a symbol of patriotism and integrity.
